Roughs

A little inspiration...

I think what I enjoy most about this is the color scheme, its simplicity, and use of shape and line.

I feel like one of the things I was always told by my professors was think outside of the initials, but this is such a creative way to go about it.

I really enjoy the hand written quality of the font, its very whimsical as well. The buttons are a great marketing tool.

Color scheme, Font, I love everything about this.

Design Brief

Company Profile

The non-profit organization I chose to work with this semester will be the Western Youth Network (WYN) of Western North Carolina. Founded in 1985, WYN is a non profit organization whose goal is to help children and teens to succeed in not only school, but in life. Originally housed at New River Mental Health, WYN received grant funding for its first program through the NC Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. In 1990 the WYN Board of Directors struck a deal with WAMY Community Action and began an intensive campaign to raise funds for remodeling. Over the following three years, WYN secured almost $300,000 in contributions from foundations, Watauga County, the Town of Boone, local businesses and individual donors. In 2002, WYN began expanding services to other counties. With additional grant funds from DJJDP's Governor's One-On-One Mentoring Program, they began a "half time" mentoring program in Avery County to complement the "full time" program that had been operating in Watauga since 1985. WYN offers a wide variety of programs such as prevention, after school programs, mentoring, and summer programs. Now, some 20 years later, WYN is looking to expand their services that help  hundreds of youth and families each year in Watauga, Avery and Ashe counties.

Project Goal

As the lead graphic designer, my goal this semester is to work with my friend Amie Boger who is hosting a charity event for WYN in December, and create a new image for the event. It will be held on campus at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Amie Boger is the event coordinator, as well as her professor Dr. Lynn Gregory, who be assisting in the event as well. I want this design to be able to be accessible and relatable to the students and locals who live in and around Appalachian State. WYN is losing its state funding and this is a great way to get the name out there for potential donors. Not only do I want this, but I also want people to see the design and think about what a great thing this organization is doing for local kids in an effort to help them succeed in life. I want to keep the design simple and clean, using colors such as blues and reds. Using WYN as a resource itself, I will also be visiting with the mentors to use my own photographs of the organization and the children at work.

Target Audience

Since the organization is losing state funding, the target audience I am striving for first would be new and potential donors to the network. Professors, Students, as well future Mentors and teachers are also a big part of the organization that I would like to target. I want these people to feel and understand they are giving there money to a worth while organization.

Communication Task-"The Message"

Growing up can be hard, especially for teens and parents alike. This means making tough decisions, choosing the right path, and accomplishing ones goals and dreams. The Watauga Youth Network (WYN) is a non profit organization whose goal is to help the youth of Watauga, Ashe, and Avery County succeed not only in school, but in life. Founded in 1985, WYN offers wide variety of programs such as prevention, after school programs, mentoring, and summer programs connecting parents, schools, as well as networking hundreds of children across western North Carolina. WYN gives a chance for kids just to be kids, by giving them the chance to discover their own answers and unique voice. With the help of WYN, who they can become, is now up to them.

Budget & Time

As a non profit organization, I do believe it is important to create a design that will be within the budget of the organization. Using color will be important, but I would also like the package to be just as effective printed off in black and white to meet the organizations budget needs. In December there will be a charity event on campus for WYN, so I would like to keep on track and get things finalized by mid November to suite the clients needs.
